I've been away for the past few weeks on purpose. I find it hard to continue blogging with my boys home from school. We've been having a lot of fun swimming in the ocean and at the community pool. I've been trying to keep away from the computer so that I can fully experience summer and my boys.
I know my time with my kids as young boys is limited. It haunts me that my babies will soon be teens. They're both in the tween stage of life. My little Aidan will be 11 years old in October. Lucas will be 13 years old in December. I love this time in our lives together. I think that the ages between 8 and 12 are so much fun (they are still young enough that they enjoy hanging out with their Mom). They 're also more independent and less needy of me so that I can enjoy them without all the fatigue.
I love going to the ocean and we're lucky because we're only a few minutes away from it. But the news shows had to spoil it for me. They keep showing photos of great white sharks off the coast of Cape Cod. Over and over again we see the photo of a great white shark coming close to a man on a kyack. They say that sharks are attracted to the seal population, which is good because I haven't seen any seals at Robert Moses. Still, the images are terrifying and I have never gotten over the "Jaws" movie when I was 10.
I have managed to keep painting this summer. I paint mostly at night because we're out all day. I like to paint instead of watching T.V.
I also began to paint a new mixed media art journal. Art journals are therapeutic to make. It's nice to sit in the living room with my husband while he watches television and I paint a book into an art journal.
This particular journal is made from a children's Atlas.
I opened each page and thought about what colors represent that country to me.
Spain makes me think of bull fighting. Bulls make me think of red. Just so you know, I'm not a fan of bull fighting at all. In fact, I hate bull fighting so much that I hesitate to even publish this photo. But I love the way this page looks. It is also what comes to mind when I think of Spain.
France reminds me of yellow sunflower fields under blue skies.
Russia started with red. Somehow it didn't fit. I guess since it is no longer communist "red" country or even Russia anymore. Anyway, I didn't want red to be it's defining theme color. So I added blues, greens white splotches and dots for fun. I think the Russian's need some fun and less seriousness.
Austria and Switzerland remind me of Mozart and mountains. It called for a dash of gold and regal colors of aristocracy.
Some pages were about large regions of the world combined so I took the opportunity to cover the whole page with paint.
When I imagine Greece, I see all of those white stucco buildings overlooking the sea. I added yellow to represent happiness and enthusiasm that the Greeks exude.
OPA!
The Chinese love the color combination of red and yellow. Red signifies good luck to the Chinese so I wanted lots of it to jump off the page.
It's a little messy because I used a non-water proof pen. When I colored it in with markers I smudged it a bit. Doesn't matter, it is just a journal page. It will get written on anyway. I am happy with the results of my first attempt. I hope I remember that it's just a journal page and write on it. I hate when I won't write in a journal because the background is too dear. Journals are meant for writing and creating. They're supposed to be an open place to spill thoughts and play with drawings and doodles.
What we pour out on the page can unleash our true desires. When we create in freedom we may see things we never noticed about ourselves before. Let's hope we can all remember to feel that our voice and creativity needs to be heard. We all need a space to feel free to express ourselves.
Are you taking time, slowing things down a bit this summer? If you feel like you need to slow down but can't, try making a mandala. It's meant to be used as an exercise in meditation, slowing down the thoughts, letting whatever come up...come.
Don't over think it. Pick a symbol, place it on the page, then move the paper to the next spot and place the same symbol in the next spot. Continue to the end of the circle, pick a new symbol, place it on the page. Move around the circle with the same symbol again. You'll surprise yourself that you can make one too. Maybe you'll even have some fun and begin to relax.
Check out June's new mandala's on Ebay. I've aquired 2 of her mandala's on Ebay and they are so colorful and bright. I just love them!

I saved my favorite pages for last. My friend June, who makes mandalas forwarded me iHanna's tutorial about making mandalas. I've never thought that I would have the patience to make a mandala. After reading her blog post and watching a video how to make one, I had to try it.

Denise, I’ve never gotten over the sharks in Jaws either :-(
I’d glad you paint instead of watch TV – television is so passive and can quench creative juices.
You’re so inspiring. Oh how I love those bright colors in the art journal! How long did it take you to paint the mandala? Looks time consuming. But worth every minute.
Editing my first comment.
*I'm* glad you paint...
:-)
Enjoy the remainder of your summer!
Denise, is June in Ireland?
I love those wall hangings.
What size are they?
Never mind, I see the size on the right.
Hi Debra,
Yes, June lives in Ireland.
Thanks for commenting and I'm glad I'm not the only one still traumatized by "Jaws".
Not that I want you to be traumatized. But, you know what I mean.
I found your blog through Ana's { Introverted Art } blog. I really liked your reply to her last post so I came to visit you :-)
Your paintings are so "life giving", so beautiful. I liked the cat picture and the moonlit night picture in your previous post. I also paint, painting is my hobby.
In spite of a busy schedule you continue to paint and blog-that's admirable !
Keep it up !
What a great summer you are having- time with your boys, the ocean, and art! The shark thing made me nervous when were at Myrtle Beach. I think you and I use our art journals for the same purpose! Have a wonderful rest of summer!
Thanks so much, Denni, for sharing your beautiful country/colour art journal pages with us - they're all wonderful and vibrant. And an extra special thank you for mentioning my Celtic mandalas and for putting a link to my blog and my ebay shop/newest listings. Thank you so very, very much doing that. A few new ones will be added shortly. I'm so glad you like the mandalas that you won recently, Denni. That just makes my heart sing to know that.
I've not yet tried the mandalas mentioned in Hanna's blog, but as soon as I get a bit of free time from making the Celtic mandalas for two upcoming festivals here in Ireland (including a John Wayne Film festival in Cong, Co. Mayo, where 'The Quiet Man' was filmed - I can't wait!), and two craft shops as well as more mandalas for our ebay shop, I'll definitely be checking out that mandala video and trying my hand at her technique, as it looks so beautiful.
You're definitely not the only one who was deeply freaked out after seeing 'Jaws' the first time. It took me ages to get brave enough to get back into the ocean after that film. The power of cinema! And great white sharks, LOL.
No chance of getting into the water here, though - it's much too cold here in the northwest of the country. But then again, this is Ireland, so.
Love your paintings, Denni, and hope you put some more up on ebay soon. Keep blogging, keep painting, and keep art journaling. You're excellent at all three.
I love your "atlas" paintings. It is true how different places how a different color or theme to them. I think your really nailed each one. Thanks for following my blog too-and come to New Hampshire. It is kind of like Vermont but not quite. I have never been to the shore of NY either-but it looks really pretty. I need to add it to my want to go places. (I may not go in the water though because just like off of Cape Cod I don't want to run into any great white sharks.)
Sounds like you had a fab time. :) Great bright colors! :)
You're having some handsome sons, I guess you have much good time together :)
What a lovely beach! The sand! :) oh yeah, I've heard about the great white sharks! :/ I would not dare to go to bath there! but it must be a lovely sea to bath in, if not the sharks..
I too can remember the frightening film "Jaws"! :O
I can see we have several things in common..
I too prefer to paint or to blog instead of tv, I do not like tv much..
and I like most to paint at nights.. especially when I'm left alone and it's quiet, no tv.. :))
What gorgeous paintings you've done about the different countries.. I would like what you think about my country.. :))
I too hate bull fighing, it should hav been forbidden!
I've never drawn a mandala.. yours are lovely! :)
fabulous post, going to look at the art on e bay.
Looks like you are having a great time. Your mandalas are just wonderful. I don't think I would like bull fighting, but I would love to go to Spain. Great work Denise. Thanks for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend.
Love your atlas paintings! So interesting to read about what inspired you with each country!
I hope the sharks steer clear of Robert Moses! :-)
Enjoy your kids, I have news they are fun no matter how old they are if you stay connected!! Good for you dedicating this time to them!!
Your paintings are lovely!! I especially love the Mandela one...very beautiful!
Hugs Giggles
Thank you all for the wonderful comments you have left for me. I love reading them all.
Hi Denise- thanks for stopping by my blog. I am also spending time with my boys this summer (mine are 14+17) so I make time when they are interested in hanging with Mom.
Love your Atlas journal and the colors you picked. Beautiful! I paint in the evenings as well, while the kids are watching a movie or TV or You Tube (one of the fav things). I haven't stopped by for awhile so will need to catch up on your posts.
Glad you're having a fun summer with your boys! :)
Love, love, love your paintings on the pages of this children's atlas!
I can't get enough map art! :)
♥♥♥
Happy PPF!!

Hi Denise! Lots of interesting subjects in this post:
Your boys! Yes...embrace this time..it goes by quickly. I loved it when my two boys were that age...now they are 26 and 21. Sigh.
Sharks...I am with you on that one.
Your journals!!! Make me want to fill my passport! I love travel but cannot do much this year. What an inspiration to journal/art the places you've been, or want to go to. Thank you for the idea!
Mandalas...I just made one the other day after watching a How To on Youtube...they are very relaxing to do and a great exercise to practice patterns, shapes and colors.
Congratulations on selling your work! Yay! I recently took that plunge too. I did not go on Ebay...just via my blog. Good luck!!! I hope you empty your shelves!!!
you are so right about the TV ,it saps my energy and to be honest after a day of looking after a 20mth old, the last thing I need is more energy sapping.
By the way the atlas journal is a wonderful idea, and I am with you in your dislike of bullfighting.
Your lovely painted pages take us all over the world. Nicely done.
Enjoy your sons and I agree this age span is quite wonderful. Soon the real fun begins. Dig deep, you will survive it. LOL
Looking forward to a three day visit with our soon to be 8 yr old twin grand kids. Love doing art with them.
HPPF on Sunday.
Because much has worked very well and enjoy your children.
I like your vision of Spain.
To my I do not like to see kill a bull, but if I like the Tolima where the Bullfighter plays with the bull and does not kill it, it is like watching a man and an animal dance. Saludos
Your summer sounds great. I love all the different country pages in your journal and the way you interpreted them with colors.
Thank you for the reminder to slow down some during summer. It does seem to be spinning out of hand and will be gone before we know it. How fun you have something you enjoy painting while having your boys around in summertime. Art is relaxing thus a happier Mom. :) HPPF.
Hello Denise! What a busy bee you've been this summer! I can relate to the crazy chaos that summer brings, esp. with a boy in his tweens! My stepson Connor just turned 10 this week, and he's involved in almost every activity you can be a part of, from golf and tennis lessons to VBS at church and an acting workshop at our local theatre company. It's hard to believe he'll be going into middle school next year--and all too soon will be morphing into the (dreaded!) teenager!
Thanks for visiting and sharing on my blog! I've hoped that my collection of ancestry collages would spark some memories in my blogging buddies, of their own family histories! It sounds like the matriarchs in our families were both trailblazers in their work and households...which is such a difference from what we learn in school and in pop culture (TV, movies, etc) about women who lived in the 1940's/1950's.
What gorgeous journal pages! What a wonderful idea to use a children's atlas, and to incorporate messages about each country/culture through color! And those mandalas are magnificent! Such beautiful art!:-)
You are wise to really be in the moment with your boys at their ages.
I love the journal pages. A children's atlas is a great book from which to make one.
xoxo
This post was eye candy! Thanks Terah
Congratulations Denise - you've been featured at Inspire Me Monday!
Thanks for sharing your fabulous art and being such an inspiration to us all!

Beautiful art very inspiring! I haven't done work in my art journal in awhile but its fun and soothes the spirit. I will have to upload some pictures of pages sometime. Thanks for the lovely post and keep up the great work.
I am a color person and these pages just SING!
Wonderful artwork!
Glad you're blogging again and I think your priorities are bang on with the boys. I love your interpretation of the different countries.
