On Frozen Pond

In keeping with my "Winter Bliss" campaign (I'm tryng to embrace the winter as much as I can) I'm getting out more this winter and it has been fun.

We headed out to the park yesterday to a tiny little slope that my kids love to sleigh ride on.  The slope is "barely there" so small because where I live there are no hills!  I grew up on the other side of Long Island called the North Shore where it is all hill country.  I even grew up on a hill.  Now, I live on the South Shore where it is totally flat.  It's the side with the ocean which is great in the summer. The winter however, I find it lacking in places to get some good hills for sleigh riding.

This is not the slope, did you  really think I was  going to let my kids ride into the pond?  The pond was frozen but not enough for ice skating.  Another winter activity that I love.

They are so happy sleigh riding, I should clarify, snow board riding.

Eating snow is his great past time.

And their off!

Me and their Dad like to go too.  I went down a couple times,  it's still so much fun even as an adult.  I wouldn't let my husband take pictures though.  I have enough embarrassing pictures of me sleigh riding last year.

I was the evil one this year I  got photos of him!
My husband tried the stand up snow board.  He went flying and then face down in the snow!  Hee, Hee.  I wish my camera caught it.  So funny!

I only caught it at the bottom.  The snow board was left halfway at the top, basically he rode his down coat all the way to the bottom.    ;)

I was getting cold so I decided to walk through the park a bit and take photos.
I love to walk through the quiet snow in winter.  I always feel the presence of God out in nature.  The beauty and peace feels like God is saying  "Here child, I give to you my perfect peace.  I give to you my artistry, a magical sunset for those who take the time to stop and see".

I love all of God's creatures.  The ducks came  up to see if I had any food.

They were running up to me and slipping and falling on the ice.

For me, there is nothing cuter than a duck face.
Look how sweet.

They left quickly when they found out that I had no food for them.

I felt bad for the ducks, they seemed like they were starving.  They probably are very hungry because all the grass is covered in snow.  The snow is too deep for them to walk in.  A lot of people go to the pond in nice weather and feed the ducks bread.  Bread is not good for them.  They  become accustomed to being fed by humans as well.  Since I know that these ducks are used to being feed a lot of supplemental bread, I figured a little treat of duck chow would be good for them.

So while the others were content sleigh riding,  I went down to the pet store and bought some duck chow.

I picked up some hot chocolate for us!

My boys enjoyed feeding the ducks they felt good about themselves for doing so.

Wherever you live, if it's cold outside, remember your feathered friends too!

Now for some New Years Fun!

A Birthday In New York City

It was my oldest son's birthday last Wednesday December 22, 2010.  He is now eleven!  Me (my hair looks dark brown in this picture?)    Lucas in the middle, and his aunt Terry.

This is the boy that made me a mom.  He has blessed our family with such love, laughter and joy.  He has the most wonderful, joyful heart of anyone I know.  He is just happy, and grateful for everything he has.  Such maturity for one little boy.

He wanted to go see the King Tut Exhibit in NYC for his birthday.  I was only too happy to give this little guy anything his heart desired.

So NYC we went...

It's an hour by train for us to travel there.

You arrive at Pennsylvania Station at 34 Street and 7th Avenue.  This is what you see when you finally make your way out from the ungodly hell that is Penn Station.

It's worth the crowds, the smells, and chaos to get out and see the Empire State Building in all her glory!

King Tut is Exhibited in the tourist section, Times Square.  This is a place so crowded and obnoxious that you really only want to visit.

This building looked like a lovely ghost amongst the dark ones.  The sky was calm, with quiet beauty beyond the noise of bustling streets.

King Tut was very interesting and entertaining.  But, NO pictures allowed.  So after the museum and getting a bite to eat, we headed up to 5th Avenue to see the Big Tree!

We stopped for a break to view the angels and their trumpets, announcing the Rockefeller Christmas Tree.

It was chilly, so we bought Lucas this hunters hat.  So funny because everybody in NYC are walking around with these on.  Men, women, and kids.  Also funny hats with animal faces and ears.  These are hats we used to make fun of when we were kids.  Now, it's fashion.  Whatever!   :)

Lucas, of course, was thanking us and telling us this was "the best birthday ever".  Don't you just want to give a kid like that everything?

His brother just had to go to the Times Square Toys R Us store.  Most insane place...never want to go there at Christmastime.

I was getting claustrophobic from the crowd, but managed a few photos of the fantastic lego buildings and dinosaur.   You can actually ride in the ferrous wheel too.

All legos!  Blurry photo, sorry.  After the crowded store, I was one of the many...

We escaped the madness to Bryant Park with yet another Christmas tree and some ice skating.  I love this park.  There are outdoor jewelry and handmade stores.  We had crepes with powdered sugar, hot chocolate and watched the skaters.

Sitting outside under  the twinkling lights and stars, I was in love with New York again.

Happy Birthday to my beautiful boy Lucas!

Day after Christmas, I let it all go!

Hello!  Did you survive?  I love Christmas but isn't it a relief when it's all over?  I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas.  We had a great time.  My favorite part of Christmas is Christmas Eve when we go to candlelight service at church.

I love the first snow of winter and low and behold...

I'm looking forward to playing with all of my goodies this week.  I can't wait to spend some time painting.   For some reason when my kids have off I feel like I can take a vacation from housework (just a wee bit).  I want to play too.

The snow is supposed to turn into a "blizzard" here in NY today. So far it's not that bad, just a nice blanket of white icing on everything.

How many days do you think it's okay to eat cookies for breakfast lunch and dinner?  I drink some hot chocolate made with milk, I figure that's enough protein for the day.

Winter is not my favorite season but I've decided...

I'm embracing winter this year!   Bring on the "blissard" as I'm calling my new winter outlook.  Actually I love snow, as long as I don't have to drive anywhere.

Some things I love about winter...

I enjoy snow especially when I can view it from my window.  :)

I love snowflakes...

Sometimes, it's just nice to be snowed in so I don't feel obligated to get errands done.
Staying in can be fun when you have a new project to do.  I received a new camera for Christmas.  So I'll have lots of time inside to figure it out.

I enjoy the song birds of winter.
I don't enjoy snoring, my husband and dog are both snoring together right now on the couch!

I love nature and being outside but I seldom go out if it's bitter cold.  I do love walking in the nature preserve in a dusting of snow.
I like seeing the deer that are abundant around here.  Not this kind though, I think these are reindeer.  They look so pretty in the snow.

I'm thinking the bear is saying "Forget this snow, I'm goin home!"

Stayed inside this whole glorious day in my pajamas!  Why bother changing when my only intention is to eat, lay around, watch T.V. and play on the computer.

Hope you enjoyed a day off today!
